Tours

Tours

The Glacier Art Museum offers a variety of guided tours that explore its collection and current exhibitions. Tours are led by our team of community docents and museum staff.  They are available to families, schools, organizations, travel groups, businesses, and the public.

Tours are offered during the Museum’s regular hours. We also have a scheduled tour specifically for senior citizen visitors on the second Friday of the month. School groups with education memberships may request morning tours that begin before the Museum opens to the public.

Most tours are free with museum admission. See website for current admission rates. A post tour art activity may be added for a nominal fee. Student tours are free for schools with education memberships; others receive a student group rate.

Our tours are interactive educational experiences. No two tours are identical as we not only share insights but invite our guests to participate in discussions about art on view.

Current Exhibition

  • All ages
  • Length of tour: 45-60 minutes
  • The focus of this tour is on highlights of an exhibition(s) currently on display. It can be adapted to meet the needs and interests of the requesting group.

Art & Artists of Montana

  • Ages 7 and up
  • Length of tour: 45-60 minutes
  • Explore the history, landscape, animals, and cultural influences of Montana through art. Featured are historic and contemporary sculptures, paintings, and photographs; memorabilia used to promote Glacier National Park and Montana tourism are included when on display. Artists represented depend upon current exhibits.

Color, Line, and Shape

  • All ages
  • Length of tour: 45-60 minutes
  • Investigate how color, line, and shape are used to make works of art. Through guided looking and discussion, visitors learn how artists consciously manipulate the elements of art: color, line, shape, form, space, and texture – often in combination – to achieve specific results

Meet the Museum

  • Pre-school – 1st grade
  • Length of tour: 30 minutes
  • In this introduction to the Museum, children learn art media (painting, sculpture, photography), art themes (still life, landscape, portrait), and museum terms (gallery, artist, docent). They practice good museum manners while exploring the galleries and other spaces in our historic Carnegie building.

Self-Guided Tour

  • Groups with a tour leader are greeted at the Museum entrance and receive a short introduction to current exhibitions before investigating the museum on their own.  Reservations are made with the Education Department to ensure self-guided tours do not conflict with docent-led tours and museum events.

Group Tours

We welcome businesses, clubs, families, schools, and travel groups to schedule a docent-led tour.

If you are a school group, there is a separate request process for education tours.

All group tours are led by a docent from the Museum. To receive group discount prices, you must schedule your tour in advance. For non-school groups of 5 to 10 that have reserved guided tours, adults will pay admission of $4 for adults and seniors will pay admission of $3. With groups of 10 or more that have reserved guided tours, admission is $3 for adults and $2 for seniors. Children under the age of 18 are free. Group tours of 10 or more also receive two complimentary admissions for the bus driver and tour operator. For an additional fee, hands-on creative art activities that correspond with our exhibits can be designed specifically for your group as part of your tour. Please speak to Director of Education Kathy Martin at kmartin@glacierartmuseum.org regarding fees for art activities or more specialized questions about tours. Schools are eligible for education group prices. Please see the school tour section for more information.

Tours are available during the Museum’s regular hours as tour guides are available. Please schedule at least two weeks in advance of your visit. Our tours are tailored to meet your specific needs, goals and interests. To make arrangements for your group to visit the Museum, contact the Director of Education at 406.755.5268 or info@glacierartmuseum.org. This enables us to discuss arrangements with you and identify programs and schedules that best meet your needs. Groups without reservations will be charged the regular adult Museum admission fees and a docent guided tour may not be available.

We’ll send you a confirmation letter or e-mail after we schedule your tour with information about the museum, the exhibits, and policies pertaining to cancellation.

What are your first and second choices for dates and times?
How many people are in your group?
What would you like the focus of the tour to be? (Either a Museum overview, Art & Artists of Montana, or a Current Exhibition)
Does your group have any special needs you’d like us to know about?
Are you interested in hands-on art activities?

We generally recommend a 1 hour visit, though the length of your stay can vary with the size and interests of your group. Let us know if you’d like your group to have time to explore on their own or visit the Gift Gallery. Please plan to arrive 10 minutes before your tour is scheduled to begin so that you will have time to check in at the Front Desk before your tour begins.

During nice weather, you are welcome to use the picnic tables located outside of the Museum. If the classroom is not reserved, it is also available for your group. Several restaurants and cafes are located within walking distance of the Museum.
